Experts: Abandoned well may be cause of mysterious bubbles in the swamp

ASSUMPTION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Environmental experts are looking into an abandoned well as a possible source for mystery bubbles in Assumption Parish Bayous.

Officials have been trying to figure out what is causing the natural gas to rise up out of Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou for nearly a month.

OEP, DNR, and DEQ went out Monday night and observed what is believed to be an old orphaned well in the swamps about 1,000 feet from the main bubbling area in Bayou Corne.

It is suspected that this well may be the source of the natural gas bubbling in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou waterways. The Department of Natural Resources is currently investigating and bringing in necessary equipment to complete the investigation of the suspect orphaned well.

Parish officials want to remind residents that the gas in those areas pose no risk of igniting.

DEQ is in the Bayou Corne area performing air monitoring on residential properties. If you have not completed a Rite of Passage Form (to allow DEQ onto your property) and would like to, please contact OEP at (985) 369-7386 or visit the Command Post during operating hours.

DEQ has also published a public information brochure and have begun disseminating them to residents in the Bayou Corne area. This brochure can be accessed at http://www.assumptionla.com/bayoucorne

If you experience a tremor, it can be reported via an online form provided by USGS and located on http://www.assumptionla.com/bayoucorne. If you have trouble accessing and using the form, tremors may be reported directly to USGS by emailing the date, time and location information of the tremor to assumption.eqst@gmail.com.

If a resident experiences a tremor and has no computer/internet access; they may contact OEP at (985) 369-7386 to report. USGS will be placing two additional seismic monitors in the area which will more than likely be installed over the weekend.
