LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The mobile veterans health clinic currently sits in front of the former LA Works employment building, something the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is hoping can be used as a waiting room for the clinic.
"The owners of the building have said that the veterans can wait inside if allowed to and so that's what we're asking the VA to consider," Juror Nic Hunter said at the CPPJ meeting on Wednesday, July 19.
The clinic currently has another mobile unit being used as a waiting area, but to Hunter that's not enough. He hopes Veterans Affairs will approve of the use of the empty building as a waiting room.
"These veterans are going to this mobile clinic and sometimes have to sit out in the sun and wait so they can actually get inside," Hunter said. "We hope that [Veterans Affairs] will pay attention to us."
Hunter said the ultimate goal is to get a permanent veterans clinic in Lake Charles, but it's not that easy.
"Unfortunately we're at the bottom of the totem pole, but we're always in the ear of our delegation at the state level and federal level. We need a veterans clinic period here in Lake Charles and it should have been done yesterday rather than tomorrow," he said.
Hunter said the CPPJ will continue to reach out to officials.
"We're told it will happen soon but we want to stay on them. We don't want to let this issue die," he said.
