Crowds gathered along Merryville's Main Street Saturday morning for the Centennial Celebration Parade. Led by Merryville Police and a full color guard, the parade included the Mayor of Merryville, Larry Carol, the Merryville Fire Department and local churches and organizations.
Events will continue throughout the afternoon beginning at noon with local bands performing at the Centennial Pavilion, culminating in a fireworks show beginning at 10 p.m.
The town of Merryville was established in 1912 and has since been the home to greats throughout Louisiana and the United States. A few include: Sam Houston Jones (Governor of Louisiana from 1940-1944), the first president of McNeese State University, Lt. Gov. Lether Frazar and New York Giants player, Christian Keener Cagle.
