The following news release was received by KPLC from the local chapter of the American Red Cross:
American Red Cross volunteers assisted two families, including eight people, overnight after their Southwest Louisiana homes caught fire. Four adults were affected at 1394 Edwards Road in Dequincy after the 11 p.m. fire there. Based on individual needs, the Red Cross is providing temporary housing, food, clothing, shoes and comfort kits. The volunteers also provided water and snacks for the six agencies working that Dequincy blaze. The Red Cross later assisted at a 1 a.m. fire in Lake Charles. Three adults and one child were at home at 2500 Smith Road, Lot 74, when the fire started. The Red Cross provides such aid as a gift to those in need after a disaster strikes. The charitable organization -- not a government agency -- depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
