Midnight burglar strikes Westlake pharmacy

WESTLAKE, LA (KPLC) -

Westlake Police are searching for a silver or gray hatchback after an overnight break-in at a local pharmacy.

The Westlake Police Department responded to an alarm call from Health Wise Pharmacy just before midnight.

This is the second pharmacy robbery in the lake area in the last week, and another of many across the region.

At 11:45 Saturday night, the alarm sounded at Health Wise Pharmacy in the 900 block of Sampson Street in Westlake. The first unit from the Westlake Police Department arrived less than a minute after the alarm call, but the suspect was already gone.

Police Chief Michael Dickerson said no windows were broken, but a special tool appeared to be used to remove the dead bolt mechanism from the door. The suspect headed in for two specific medications: oxycodone and codeine syrup. Police say nothing else in the building was touched.

Chief Dickerson said a little while after the incident the police received a call from a citizen saying they saw a silver or gray hatchback parked at the pharmacy just before the alarm sounded.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office assisted with Saturday night's call, as the evidence recovery team came in to process the scene.

Chief Dickerson said they received a call last week from CPSO regarding several pharmacy break-ins in the area, including Walgreens locations in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas.

Following last week's robbery of the Walgreens on Country Club Road, the Lake Charles Police Department is working with several other law enforcement agencies who also have open investigations regarding pharmacy burglaries.

They hope through the joint effort, a suspect can be identified.
