LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Port of Lake Charles welcomed some visitors to our west as the Texas A&M Maritime Vessel docked on Friday.
The ship serves as a training vessel for the Maritime Academy at Texas A&M. Cadets must spend three summers at sea as part of the four year program. Many Louisiana students are part of it.
"It's nearby from Texas and we also have a lot of students from Louisiana that go to our school. This is a close port for some of them to visit their friends, and have other people come down to see us and visit in the community," Capt. Jack Smith said.
The Maritime training ship also helps prepare students for operations in the offshore oil industry.
They ship out Monday morning.
