Lake Charles man accused of burglary and theft

The following is a Press Release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office:

On June 8, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a local casino hotel after a guest reported over $250 had been stolen from her room.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the victim who advised she went to the hotel swimming pool and asked Gregory R. Bass, 18, of Lake Charles, an employee of the hotel, to hold her room key while she swam.  When she returned to her room, she discovered over $250 cash had been stolen from inside her purse. 

During further investigation, video surveillance of the hotel captured Bass entering the victim's hotel room.  When questioned by detectives, Bass confirmed to entering the hotel room and stealing the cash from the victim's purse.

Bass was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with simple burglary; and theft under $500.

The cash was recovered and returned to the victim.

Bass has been released on a $1,500 bond set by Judge Clayton Davis.

CPSO Deputy Phil Middleton was the arresting deputy and Detective Darrell Fontenot is the lead investigator on this case.

    A cargo trailer caught fire late Saturday morning on I-10 westbound near the Westlake exit. 

    Westlake Police got a call at 10:22 a.m. of the cargo trailer smoking on the interstate, said Westlake Police Chief Chris Wilrye.
