CPPJ receives grant money for Burton renovations

Burton Renovations

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury received grant money to go toward funding for renovations to Burton Coliseum. This grant money is from local funding and totals to about $690,965 which will help with some of the costs to renovate.

CPPJ officially approved the local match for hurricane recovery funds for the Coliseum. Parish Administrator Bryan Beam said the money is for long term recovery for the community and not the immediate response.

The grant money comes from the Coliseum and Ag Services Tax, according to Beam. But that's not all.

"$3.2-million of federal funds will be provided so that is actually a separate project that will come later in the year," Beam said.

The money will go toward certain costs during the renovation process.

"The way these grants are structured, the local entity has to put up the local match for the planning type costs which typically involve architect fees, engineering fees and that sort of thing," he said.

Beam said the construction and renovations on the Coliseum should be complete within 18 to 20 months.

Also, he said by the end of 2012 renovations to the outside of Burton, including the dome, should begin.
