DES MOINES, IA – McNeese State's Ashlee Smith finished 11th in the women's discus event Wednesday during the opening day of the 2012 NCAA championship outdoor track and field meet.
The Cowgirl standout recorded a school record 176-8 toss. She uncorked that throw on her third effort.
Whitney Ashley of San Diego State took the title with a throw of 196-10. The only other Louisiana athlete in the event, LSU's Samia Stokes, finished 18th with a throw of 162-3.
Smith, a junior from Arlington, TX, had won the Southland Conference title only a couple of weeks ago and had been named McNeese State's women's track and field MVP as well as the SLC's field event MVP for the season.
Still to come for McNeese in the meet are the performances of javelin thrower Ben Chretien and distance runner David Rooney. Chretien will throw on Thursday and Rooney will run in the 5,000 meter race on Friday.
