SmartLipo offered locally for problem areas

From arm flabs to muffin tops and love handles, most people will tell you they have a problem area that they cannot nix.

SmartLipo is an alternative to traditional liposuction, that can target those problem areas in a minimally-invasive procedure.

Ask Pam Whittaker of Sulphur about her problem area and you will hear a complaint that rings true for many women.  "I have a very big phobia about going in public and showing my legs," she said.

This 47-year-old mom of three and grandmother of two reverted to only wearing shorts and skirts that hit her knees.  "For a long time," she said, "that's one thing that's always bothered me."

Dr. Steve Springer at Renew Medical Spa in Lake Charles performs what is called "SmartLipo," a fat-sucking and skin tightening procedure that does not require sedation and a lengthy recovery.  "We put thermal energy underneath the skin and when we do that, that causes skin tightening and a lot of folks for loose skin that they just can't get rid of," he said.

The best candidates for SmartLipo are men or women who are not significantly overweight, but maybe accumulated some extra fat deposits that they are having a tough time getting rid of.

You might have seen very rough images of traditional liposuction using long tools and suction tubes, but SmartLipo scales down those sizes.  "The actual tool used is about the size of a spaghetti noodle," said Dr. Springer.

SmartLipo is a three step procedure, starting with a numbing medicine under the skin, then followed by a laser fiber.  "We slide that right underneath and that's what melts the fat and does skin tightening underneath the skin," said Dr. Springer.

Then comes the suction canula, that removes the melted fat.  From start to finish, Pam says it took about three hours to have her inner thighs changed from a nuisance to a new shape that she is happy about today.  "I was scared at first and nervous, but it's really nothing, it's awesome and I would think about getting another part of my body done," she said.

Results can be seen immediately, but it takes about six months to see the full benefits. A SmartLipo session costs around $3,500.  For more information, call Renew Medical Spa at 436-3840.
