Avenue of Flags in Lake Charles Avenue of Flags in Lake Charles

There are several events planned today for Memorial Day in SWLA. Here is a listing of some of them.

Avenue of Flags: A display of more than 842 American flags has been set up at Orange Grove Graceland Cemetery on Broad St. in Lake Charles. There will also be a ceremony starting at 9 a.m. Monday. Volunteers are asked to come out and help take the display down, around 5 p.m.

Final memorial ceremony: In Iota at 2 p.m., a ceremony will be held for PFC Elroy LeJeune at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Cemetery. There will be taps, a 21 gun salute and a presentation of the flag. Private LeJeune was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in 1945.

Military casket flags display: Starting at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Sulphur VFW and American Legion members and volunteers will put up a display of military casket flags at Roselawn Cemetery. Roselawn is just off I-10 at Ruth Street in Sulphur. They will also put up miniature flags at other cemeteries.

    The Army Corps of Engineers plans to issue the necessary permits for the Bayou Bridge pipeline, according to a news release from the office of Congressman Clay Higgins. The news release said Colonel Michael Clancy, of the Army Corps of Engineers, announced Thursday that the New Orleans District has concluded its environmental assessment and will issue necessary permits to Bayou Bridge Pipeline, LLC.     Defense attorneys for Kevin Daigle were in state court on Friday asking for his trial to be delayed again and that the judge choose a different place to pick a jury. Daigle also was in court. He's accused of first-degree murder of State Trooper Steven Vincent in 2015.
