4 area schools to participate in state voucher program

Three schools in Calcasieu Parish and one school in Beauregard Parish are participating in the Louisiana Scholarship Program during the 2012-2013 school year.

Eternity Christian Academy, Our Lady's School and St. Theodore Holy Family Catholic School will participate in the voucher program for Calcasieu Parish and BeauVer Christian will participate in voucher program for Beauregard Parish . No schools in Allen Parish, Cameron Parish, Jeff Davis Parish or Vernon Parish will participate.

To be eligible, a child must have been enrolled in a public school, a CD, or F-rated public school, during the 2011-2012 school year, unless a student is entering kindergarten for the first time in the 2012-2013 school year.  Students must also be residents of Louisiana and meet income eligibility requirements (family income in 2011 cannot exceed 250% of the federal poverty guidelines).

Students must submit completed applications no later than Friday, June 29, to the participating school they want to attend.

    One local fraternity made sure some families in Southwest Louisiana had a fully cooked meal to enjoy for Christmas. "We have turkeys and hams, but it's enough food in the box to feed a family of eight," said  Mark Gallashaw, president of Kappa Alpha Psi's Lake Charles Alumni Chapter. Thirty-five boxes of cooked meals are getting ready to be delivered to families across Southwest Louisiana.

    LCPD: Suspect arrested after vehicle pursuit in Lake Charles

    The Lake Charles Police Department has arrested one person after a nearly 20-minute pursuit Saturday afternoon. LCPD received a call of a person shooting a firearm from a vehicle on the 1900 block of Prejean Drive in the afternoon, said LCPD Deputy Chief Mark Kraus. Police located the vehicle near Hwy 14. A 19-minute pursuit then ensued, and ended with a suspect arrested.
