Changes to Burton Coliseum

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

With more events scheduled at Burton Coliseum, renovations are something that has been needed for some time, including a name change.

The name has been changed from Burton Coliseum to the Burton Complex.

Assistant to the Parish Administrator Dane Bolin said renovating the coliseum is important for maintenance measures and appearance for big events.

"Over the next two or three months, we'll have over 40,000 visitors at Burton Coliseum with McNeese graduation, high school graduations, rodeos coming up, so we're very excited," Bolin said.

Improving the coliseum was necessary and required a lot of help.

"There has been a lot of quality work that has been done over the last several months out here," Bolin said. "It's a team effort between McNeese State University and the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and other entities in the parish."

But preparing a coliseum for visitors and events is more than just renovations. Bolin said it's making sure everything is in order.

"You prepare for a big event with a lot of team work. You have a lot of agencies and everyone in the community pulling together whether it be from security aspect, concessions, seating. Team work in Calcasieu Parish as always is very strong," Bolin said.

Current renovations at the coliseum include color coded corridors, flat screen monitors above the concession stands and vinyl placing on the walls to add color to the walls.

And the show must go on, because the total makeover of the coliseum is hardly complete.

Restroom and concession stand renovations still need to be complete along with a new roof on the coliseum and a fresh coat of paint of the exterior.

These renovations will take place within the next year to a year and a half.

To start off our week, we will have another hot and sunny day. There will be a few clouds that build up this afternoon, but the rain chances are slim to none. Temperatures will once again be very hot. Highs will reach the mid 90s. Some area north of I-10 could reach the upper 90s. Heat indices will also be in the triple digits. A heat advisory will likely be issued. If you are planning on spending time outdoors, I recommend taking caution in the heat.
