DeQuincy teacher surprised with national award

A fourth grade teacher at DeQuincy Elementary School was awarded with the Horace Mann Abraham Lincoln Fellowship award for bringing Abraham Lincoln to life.

Summer Royer will travel to Springfield, Ill. to spend a week studying the life and impact of President Abraham Lincoln.

"They sent us an email and we were to enter a photo contest by bringing Abraham Lincoln to our area and since DeQuincy is known for a railroad I brought my whole class to the Railroad Museum Park and we took a picture with another Abraham Lincoln. I selected one of my students and he played the part," Royer said.

Royer is one of just 50 teachers nationwide to earn this honor.
