Jennings festival celebrates goodness of gourds

JENNINGS, LA (AP) - The Louisiana Gourd Society is getting ready for the second Acadiana Gourd Festival.
Society President Kate Bangle has been growing, crafting and selling gourds for more than a decade from her small gourd farm in Mermentau, just east of Jennings.
She says that the society plans its first competition at the festival May 18-19 at the Jeff Davis Parish fairgrounds in Jennings.
People who want to compete must have their applications and entry fees in the hands of the society by May 1.
The two-day festival will feature raw and crafted gourds, gourd art supplies, gourd seed exchange, gourd crafting classes and demonstrations and children's gourd crafting activities.
