NACOGDOCHES, TX.-- McNeese State's softball team dropped a Southland Conference doubleheader at Stephen F. Austin here Tuesday with 9-8 first game loss and a 4-1 second game loss. The games were make-upa for rain out games that were scheduled earlier in the conference schedule. The losses drop the Cowgirls to 25-12 overall and 10-4 in league play. The Ladyjacks improve to 13-27 overall and 4-10 in league play.
The Cowgirls trailed 8-2 after three innings in the opening game but came back to tie the game eight all in the sixth with five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Unfortunately Stephen F. Austin scored the game winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to take the 9-8 win.
McNeese picked up 11 hits in the game and left seven baserunners stranded. Claire Terracina, Lauren Langner, Alanna DiVittorio, Ashley Modzelewski and Marissa Koetting all collected two hits apiece. Langner and Modzelewski had the only extra base hits with a triple and a double, respectively.
Tiffany Denham took the loss for the Cowgirls in relief of starter Meagan Bond. Bond was chased from the circle after giving up seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. Bianca Lilly was the first Cowgirl reliever who replaced Bond. Lilly gave up one run on three hits in 1.2 innings before being replaced by Denham.
In the nightcap, McNeese struggled to score despite collecting 12 hits in the game. McNeese once again trailed early in the game, 4-0 after two innings. The Cowgirls got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Kim Kennedy scored on a SFA error.
DiVittorio led the Cowgirls in this game with a 3 for 3 plate appearance and Denham also picked up the second game loss to fall to 9-7 on the season.
