Cowgirls Crush Sam Houston

LAKE CHARLES (KPLC)- McNeese State's softball team picked up a 9-3 Southland Conference victory here Saturday in the final game of the two game series to improve to 25-11 overall and 8-2 in league play.  The loss drops the Bearkats to 18-17 overall and 8-4 in league play.

Claire Terracina and Marissa Koetting led the Cowgirls on the day with three hits apiece.  Terracina was 3 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs.  Koetting was 3 for 4 and scored one run.  Dani Price led the Cowgirls with three RBI's and was 2 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs. 

McNeese used a five run, six hit fifth inning to break open the game and took a 7-2 lead.  The Cowgirls pounded out 15 hits in the game and had five extra base hits including three consecutive doubles in the fifth by Terracina, Lauren Langner and Alanna DiVittorio that scored three of the five runs in the inning.  The other two runs cam off a single by Ashley Modzelewski and a bases loaded walk by Price.

The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single to right center by Marissa Koetting that scored Terracina who led the inning off with a walk.

Sam Houston State took a 2-1 lead in the second on two hits and one Cowgirl error but the Cowgirls countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at two all.  Katie Roux's RBI single to left center scored Stacey Conley who reached base on a two out double to right center.

Price ended the Cowgirl scoring in the sixth with a two run home run over the left field fence that scored Koetting.  Koetting reached base on a single to center field.  The home run for Price is her third of the season.

Sam Houston State added a run in the seventh on a RBI ground out by Shelbi Tucker that scored pinch runner Jessica Slater.

Tiffany Denham picked up the complete game victory to improve to 9-5 on the year.  Denham gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked one batter.

The Cowgirls will travel to Stephen F. Austin Tuesday for a 2 p.m. make-up double header that was originally scheduled for March 9.  The Cowgirls will also travel to LSU on Tuesday for a single game at 6 p.m. and Texas State on the next weekend for a two game Southland Conference series.
