BATON ROUGE-- McNeese State picked up a run-rule 12-1, five inning non-conference win over Southern here Tuesday to improve to 24-10 overall. Southern falls to 6-23 on the year. The run-rule by the Cowgirls is the second over the Jaguars this season. McNeese won 8-0 in five innings in Lake Charles on March 27.
The Cowgirls scored 12 runs on 13 hits and 17 Cowgirls saw action in the game. Katie Roux led the Cowgirls' hitting attack, going 3 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs. Designated player MyKeisha Young was 2 for 2 and scored one run.
Eight other players collected one hit. Alanna DiVittorio, Lauren Langner, Ashley Modzelewski and Marissa Koetting hits were extra base hits. Koetting hit her team leading fifth home run of the season. DiVittorio hit her sixth double of the season, Langner and Modzelewski hit their first career triples.
McNeese scored at least one run in each of the five innings and took a 5-0 lead in the first on five hits and two Southern errors. The Cowgirls added a single run in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Meagan Bond improved to 15-6 overall with the win in two innings pitched. Bond gave up one run on two hits and struck out two batters.
Tiffany Denham relieved Bond and pitched the final two innings of the game. Denham through two hitless innings and struck out three and walked two.
