LAKE CHARLES-(KPLC) McNeese State's softball team completed a Southland Conference series sweep over Texas-Arlington today with a 3-2 come from behind win. The Cowgirls improve to 23-10 overall and 7-1 in league play with the win while the Mavericks fall to 12-18 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Senior pitcher Tiffany Denham picked up the win to improve to 8-4 on the year. Denham gave up four hits and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings. Junior Meagan Bond faced the last two batters of the game.
The Cowgirls collected four hits in the game with Lauren Langner, Ashley Modzelewski, Marissa Koetting and Dani Price all getting one hit apiece.
UT-Arlington took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on two hits and one Cowgirl error. Stephanie Gonzales led the game off with a single and scored on a RBI by Courtney Zink for a 1-0 UTA lead. UTA's other run came when Zink scored on a wild pitch.
McNeese got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Price singled to right to score pinch runner Meagan Knippa to cut the lead to 2-1. The Cowgirls tied the game in the third on a RBI blooper single to left by Koetting that scored Langner. Langner reached base on a UTA error to lead off the inning. Langner's RBI single to right center in the fourth scored pinch runner Kelsey Jolly for what turned out to be the game winning run.
UTA left two baserunners stranded in the seventh as the game ended. Meagan Michele led the seventh inning off with a walk then Denham struck out Teri Zink for the first out of the inning. A single by pinch hitter Sarah Higginbotham put runners on first and second for the Mavericks and chased Denham from the circle. Bond came in and got Rachel Forshaw to pop out to Modzelewski for the second out then got Gonzales to go down swinging to end the game.
