Voucher accountability

One of the tasks now facing state Superintendent of Education John White is to come up with an accountability plan for the new statewide private school voucher system.
Legislation on its way to Gov. Bobby Jindal's desk lets some students from low-performing public schools get government-funded tuition to attend private schools.
To appease some of the bill's critics, the House inserted an amendment requiring White's department to come up with an accountability plan so parents and taxpayers can see whether the private schools improve the performance of the government-aided students.
White must have the plan developed by Aug. 1.
