Andrew Guillotte squeezed pinch runner Skylar Barrentine in from third base in the bottom of the 10th inning to give McNeese State an 8-7 victory over Nicholls State in a Southland Conference game here Sunday.
The win gave the Cowboys a 2-1 edge in their series with Nicholls which had won the opener on Friday 1-0. McNeese had come back with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.
Righthander Tyler McDonald, the third of three Cowboy pitchers, turned in an outstanding effort, taking over in the second inning and going on to pitch eight innings of seven hit, two run ball, walking two and striking out two. It was his second victory in three decisions.
The game featured 21 hits, 12 of them by the Cowboys. It also featured the ejection of both head coaches and the starting second basemen for both teams.
And, it was also the 100th career victory for McNeese coach Terry Burrows.
Nicholls had taken the early lead, holding a 6-3 edge after four innings. The Colonels got to Cowboy starter Jason Gibson with one run in the first and four in the fifth. They also chased reliefer Caleb Miller who gave up a hit and two walks in but one-third inning.
McDonald came on then and over the next eight innings, gave up only two runs (both earned) and seven hits.
McNeese pecked back at the run disadvantage with one in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie the score.
The Cowboys had scored two runs in the second inning on a two run homer by Michael Sullivan, his first of the season. They added a single run in the third on a double by Nick Eubanks and a run in the sixth on a single by Taylor Drake.
In the seventh, Colonel reliefer Donnie White came on for starter Mike Wisecarver after the bases were loaded and walked Renny Weber to plate a run. Eubanks belted a fly to center to drive in Guillotte and Trey Rickrode would score later on a throwing effort by Nicholls shortstop Austin Flores.
In the bottom of the 10th, Drake led the inning off for the Cowboys by drawing a walk and Barrentine was sent in to run for him. Tyler Klouser moved Barretine to second on a grounder to first and Matt Henry singled him to third.
That set up the squeeze play with Barrentine scoring.
Sullivan led the Cowboy 12 hit attach with three hits and two RBIs while Seth Granger and Guillotte both had two hits.
Beau Faulk, Michael LeGrange and Flores led Nicholls with two hits each.
Jordan McCoy, the fourth Nicholls pitcher, was tagged with the loss, his second of the season.
