I-10 driver charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana

The following is a Press Release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office:

On March 20, at 8:00 a.m., C.A.T. Team Sgt. Stuart Henderson conducted a stop on a pick-up truck traveling east on I-10 near mile marker 13 for a traffic violation.  When Sgt. Henderson spoke with the driver, David L. Matthews, 50, of Houston, Texas, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the truck. 

Sgt. Henderson conducted a search of the truck and recovered a back-pack on the floorboard containing over 2 kilos of cocaine and large trash bags on the back seat containing over 115 pounds of marijuana, with a combined estimated street value of $250,000. 

Matthews was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with possession of cocaine over 400 grams; and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. 

Judge Wilford Carter set his bond at $70,000.

    Twelve people have applied to take the Civil Service test to be the next Chief of Police for the Lake Charles Police Department. Current Chief of Police Don Dixon has announced that he intends to retire Jan. 15, 2019. The deadline to apply to take the test was Wednesday, July 18.     A heat advisory has been issued for our area through the day today. This advisory begins at 11 am and lasts until 8 pm tonight. This advisory is due to forecast highs in the mid-90s combined with dewpoints in the 70s. These two-combined causes the heat index to soar between 108 and 112. Through the day today expect hot and mostly sunny conditions. Feels-like temperatures expected to reach between 108-112 this afternoon.
