Insurance Commissioner Donelon talks flood insurance

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

In the wake of last week's massive flooding, State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is urging residents to get flood insurance if they don't already have it.

Scenes in Church Point and Carencro where residents received more than 10 inches of rain during an eight hour period took some residents by surprise as waters from bayous and streams overwhelmed the streets.

According to Donelon Louisiana is the largest benefactor of the Federal Flood Insurance Program. He said flooding can happen any place any time and urges residents to be prepared.

"With that said... I tell property owners from Shreveport to Grand Isle, from Holly Beach to Monroe - every property owner in Louisiana should have flood insurance in place. It's the best insurance buy one can make. Louisiana is particularly benefited by the National Flood Insurance Program so all of us should access it and take advantage of that federally subsidized program," explained Donelon.

Louisiana is among 12 states that are net consumers of the Federal Flood Insurance Program.
