Education reform makes it through first vote

Overnight on Wednesday night, the House Education Committee voted on both of Governor Bobby Jindal's education reform bills, House Bills 976 and 974. They passed both bills.

They will be presented to the Louisiana House of Representatives Thursday morning for a vote.

HB 974 deals with changes in teacher certification, tenure and salaries. It will also hold teachers solely accountable for students' poor performance.

HB 976 deals with school choice. It will allow parents to select which school their children attend including private and charter schools, all on the taxpayer dollar.

The Louisiana Association of Educators issued a statement saying educators "express deep disappointment in lack of transparency and democracy."

Teachers rallied on the Capitol steps Wednesday and are expected to do the same Thursday.
