LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's women's basketball team will face Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Ames, Iowa this Saturday at the 3:20 p.m. at the Hilton Coliseum. The game will be carried on ESPN2.
"We are excited to be going to Ames, Iowa but I know our fans were wishing we would play closer to home. We are fortunate that our girls have built this program to what it is today and we will play wherever they send us," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.
The Cowgirls (26-7) earned a 15 seed after winning its second Southland Conference Tournament title last weekend and will face the no. 2 seed in Kentucky who earned an at-large bid.
McNeese will make its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and second in school history. Kentucky (25-6) is one of eight SEC teams to make the tournament and Kentucky is making its ninth overall tournament appearance.
This will be the second all-time meeting between McNeese and Kentucky. The Cowgirls played at Kentucky during the 2009-10 season, coach Williams' third season at McNeese. Kentucky won the game 85-50. That year, McNeese posted a 7-22 overall record and has since then produced back-to-back 26-7 overall records the past two seasons.
All Session tickets are on sale now and include tickets to both games on Saturday (3:00 and 5:30 p.m.) as well as the Monday evening game (8:30 p.m.).
