NATCHITOCHES - McNeese State kicked off its Southland Conference baseball season here Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Northwestern State.
After dropping the opener 8-0, the Cowboys came back with a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.
The two teams will play a third and final game Sunday, the start of that outing being moved up to 10 a.m.
The Cowboys got the hits and the pitching in the second game as Blake Ware went eight innings to gain the win, giving up one run on six hits and striking out four.
Michael Clemens, the third Cowboy pitcher, came on with one out in the ninth to earn a save.
The Cowboys, who were held to one hit in the opener, came back with 10 hits in the second game, Nick Eubanks, Renny Weber, Seth Granger and Tyler Klouser all getting two hits each. Granger belted his second home run of the season in the eighth inning and also drove in total of three runs.
Ware ran his record to 2-1 on the season and Clemens earned his first save.
The Demons' Colin Bear gave up only one hit in eight innings against the Cowboys in the opener and he struckout eight batters. The lone McNeese hit was producded by Weber.
Trey Brown was charged with the loss, his second. He gave luip seven earned runs and 10 hits in 6.1 innings.
Both teams are now 4-10 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
