LAKE CHARLES-- Junior Ashlyn Baggett helped the 2012 seniors celebrate senior night scoring a game high 26 points to lead McNeese State to a 68-53 Southland Conference victory over Southeastern La.
here Wednesday night. Baggett was 9 of 14 from the field including a career tying six three-pointers. The Cowgirls improved to 22-7 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
Seniors Kendra Wells, Raiyawna Gatlin, Candace LaCombe, Jordan Hines and Martika Hull were honored prior to the game.
"This was a great win for our seniors on their special night.
We not only wanted to honor them but we wanted to win for them," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.
Wells and Gatlin did their part in their final home game as Wells recorded her third consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Wells inched one step closer to grabbing her 1,000th career rebound. She is now seven rebounds away from that mark.
Gatlin who has been a spark off the bench throughout her career did the same here tonight by scoring 14 points and grabbing a career high 11 rebounds off the bench. Gatlin led the Cowgirls with eight offensive rebounds.
McNeese held a 39-27 halftime lead and held the lead from the
12:36 mark in the first half. McNeese continued to increase its lead in the second half but Southeastern La. would cut the lead back to single digits for the last time with 12:43 left in the game.
That's when Gatlin gave the Cowgirls the final spark they needed by scoring four straight points to give McNeese a 55-43 lead with 7:49 left in the game. The Cowgirls went on to outscore the Lady Lions 13-8 in the final six minutes of the game.
McNeese will travel to Lamar Saturday for its regular season finale before taking part in the Southland Conference Tournament next week.
