"Read Across America" kicks off at Prien Lake Mall

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Shopping took a back seat at the Prien Lake Mall Saturday as guest readers entertained children with their favorite Dr. Seuss stories.

The event kicked off "Read Across America" week and the work Dr. Seuss has done to promote reading among children. It's a joint effort between the Calcasieu Association of Educators and National Education Association.

Organizers said the goal is to get kids reading early and make a difference.

"It's important because people need to be able to read to communicate as they grow older and so forth and that's one of the things Dr. Seuss mainly worked on when here wrote his books so the children had somewhere they could go to enjoy reading to have a good time to be turned on to reading," said Mark Hayes, Calcasieu Association of Educators President.

Organizers Mark Hayes and Linda Ferguson would like to give a big thanks to all the volunteers for making the event a huge success.
