Initial stretch of bike-hike trail opening

Lafayette, La (AP) - The first segment of a biking and hiking trail that eventually could stretch from downtown Lafayette into St. Martin Parish was scheduled to open this weekend.

The Atakapa-Ishak Trail is named after Indians who lived along the Vermilion River. It's been in the planning stages for several years.

The initial phase is a 1.2-mile trail connecting Parc Sans Souci in downtown Lafayette with Beaver Park along the Vermilion River.
