HOUSTON, TX (KPLC)-McNeese State's softball team ended the Houston Hilton Invitational with two wins here Sunday to end the tournament with a 3-1 record. McNeese defeated Louisiana-Monroe by a 2-0 score earlier today then picked up another come from behind 5-4 win over #17 Houston for the second straight day. The wins improve the Cowgirls' overall record to 7-4. McNeese will host Houston Baptist Tuesday in its home opener. A doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Cowgirl Diamond.
The Cowgirls pounded out 10 hits with Stacey Conley and Dani Price picking up two apiece. Bond picked up her second victory of the day and third consecutive win to improve to 5-2 on the season. Bond didn't give up a hit in her three innings of work and struck out three.
McNeese took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a double by Ashley Modzelewski that scored Marissa Koetting. A sacrifice fly by Katie Roux scored Price who singled.
Houston would come back to tie the game at two all in the third. With two outs in the inning, Cowgirl starter Bianca Lilly hit Ashleigh Jones then Reina Gaber singled. Both players advanced to second and third on a double steal. A two RBI double by Holly Anderson scored both players to tie the game. Houston took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on back to back doubles by Jaime Edwards and Melissa Gregson. Edwards scored on Gregson's double. The Cougars extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a RBI single by Gaber that scored Jones for a 4-2 lead.
The Cowgirls came back with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Katie Roux led the inning off with a double then was replaced by pinch runner Courtney Hebert. Hebert scored on a Houston error to cut the lead to 4-3. Claire Terracina then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a single by Kim Kennedy and another Houston error. A RBI single by Conley scored Terracina to tie the game at four all. McNeese took the lead and scored what would turn out to be the game on a sacrifice fly by Alanna DiVittorio that scored Kennedy for a 5-4 Cowgirl lead.
Cowgirl reliever, Meagan Bond who relieved starter Bianca Lilly got Kendra Cullum to fly out to center then struck out Jones and Gaber to end the game.
Earlier Sunday morning, McNeese avenged a 6-2 loss it suffered to Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday with a 2-0 win today.
DiVittorio hit a lead-off solo homerun in the second inning to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, a RBI single by Kennedy scored pinch runner MyKeisha Young that scored McNeese's second run of the game. Young pinch ran for Price who led the inning off with a single.
The Cowgirls picked up four hits in the game with DiVittorio going 2 for 3 and Price and Kennedy picking up singles. Meagan Bond picked up her second consecutive win with the complete game victory. Bond gave up only two hits and recorded a career high 12 strikeouts.
