LAKE CHARLES-(KPLC) McNeese State's women's basketball dropped a 64-53 Southland Conference game here today to Central Arkansas. The loss drops the Cowgirls to 17-7 overall and 7-3 in league play. The Sugar Bears improve to 20-4 overall and 10-1 in the SLC.
McNeese place three players in double figure scoring with Candace Lacombe leading the Cowgirls with 17. LaCombe made six field goals in the game with five coming from three-point land. Also scoring in double figures was Martika Hull with 14 and Ashlyn Baggett chipped in 11. Kendra Wells led all players with a game high 16 rebounds. Wells grabbed five offensive boards and 11 defensive.
UCA's Megan Herbert led all players with a game high 26 points and produced another double-double on the year with 11 rebounds. Desiree' Rogers was the Sugar Bears' only other double figure scorer with 11 points.
McNeese looked to be in control in the first half and led by as many as 13 early in the game and by 10 points with 6:38 left in the first half. UCA went on a 8-0 run the rest of the half and trailed the Cowgirls 28-26 at the half.
McNeese continued to hold its lead until the 10:39 mark of the second half, when UCA took the lead for good and one they wouldn't give up.
With UCA leading by five points with 6:46 left in the game, back to back three's by Herbert and Rogers extended the lead to 11 with 4:50 to play. McNeese came back with two free throws by Hull and a three by Baggett to cut the lead to four points with 3:43 left. UCA then outscored the Cowgirls 9-5 the rest of the way with seven of their final nine points coming from the free throw line.
McNeese will return to Southland Conference play when they will travel to UTSA on Wednesday and Northwestern State on Saturday.
