LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Freezing temperatures are expected for the night of Saturday, Feb. 11 and early morning Sunday, Feb. 12. Protecting plants from the cold is advised.

The end of January and beginning of February temperatures started off mild allowing early blooming for spring-time flora.

"The dangerous thing about that is whenever that new growth comes out, that's whenever the plants are most susceptible to the cold," General Manager for Greengate Garden Center Daniel Chimeno said.

Chimeno said plants that would normally make it through cold temperatures will be fine for the weekend freeze, but new growth and vegetables need to be protected.

Cloth or mulch is the best type of plant protection according to Chimeno.

"Buy thing that will allow some light through, allow moisture through and things like that," he said. "But what you want it to do is to keep that warmth in."

By keeping plants protected, it will prevent the plant from getting frost burn and then dying.
