LAKE CHARLES-Cowgirls Get Back On Winning Track With Win Over Sam Houston State LAKE CHARLES-- Ashlyn Baggett led a trio of McNeese State Cowgirls with 18 points on their way to a 57-48 Southland Conference victory over Sam Houston State here Wednesday night. Caitlyn Baggett chipped in 14 points, all coming in the second half and Kendra Wells recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Martika Hull also ended the game with 10 rebounds.
"I thought we did a good job of toughening it out and attacking. We talked about maintaining what we do and attacking is what we do," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.
McNeese held a slim one point lead (22-21) at the half behind a 33.3 field goal shooting percent. McNeese held the lead for most of the game, trailing once in the game, by two points with 12:10 left in the game. The Cowgirls held its largest lead of the game (14 points) with :058 seconds left in the game.
McNeese ended the game shooting 35.0 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free throw line, scoring nine of its last 15 points from the charity stripe. The Cowgirls ended the game making 10 of 15 free throws with Caitlyn Baggett connecting on five of seven.
The win improves McNeese to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play, improving their home records to 24-1 overall and 14-0 in conference play, dating back to last season.
McNeese will travel to Nacogdoches, Tx. This Saturday for a 6 p.m. game against Stephen F. Austin.
