BBB warning on senior scam

The following is a Press Release from the Better Business Bureau:

The Better Business Bureau of Southwest La., Inc. has received calls from local senior citizens reporting that they have been contacted by a company stating that they are eligible to receive a "Free" Medicaid Card.

The Catch: the consumer must provide the caller with their bank account number. This is clearly an attempt to steal their identity.

One consumer reported that the number that showed up on her caller ID was 347-418-0487 which is from the New York area. When called, there is a recording stating that the number is temporarily out of service.

Carmen Million, BBB President, states that it is the consumer's right and responsibility to protect their personal information. "We recommend that you ask questions, gather information and then call the BBB or if unsure, just hang up the phone", said Million.

As always, BBB cautions consumers to be very careful when asked for personal information. Do not provide personal or financial information to anyone you do not know. When in doubt, check it out first- call your BBB at 337-478-6253.
