Local events honor King's life, legacy

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

There were a few Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebrations that took place Sunday evening in Lake Charles.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Zeta Psi Omega Chapter along with the American Legion Post 551 saluted Dr. King with America's Sunday Supper and a salute to veterans' service.

There was also a MLK Gospel Extravaganza held at Throne of Grace Fellowship Church on 6th Street in Lake Charles.

"Because of the service they gave to their country and the things they gave up... well Dr. king also gave up a lot of his family time. And the things that he went through... We wanted to commemorate and tie the two together", said Altha Jordan Green, President of AKA Sorority local chapter.

Dr. Wilton J. Red is Sr. Pastor of Throne Of Grace Fellowship Church said, "The mission and mandate for the Civil Rights and all of that, came from the church as a voice from the pulpit so it makes sense to hold a gospel extravaganza in Dr. King's honor".

Sean Ardoin (artist) Tayler Trahan (6th grade student) and Edward C. Hudson (Army, Vietnam Veteran), all said how Dr. King has transformed the lives of all Americans.

    A single-vessel boating accident on the Sabine River near Niblett's Bluff Park Sunday evening has resulted in two children being seriously injured, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The injured children have been taken to the hospital, and one child is in critical condition, said Lt. Beau Robertson, LDWF spokesman.
