Toledo Bend water sales being considered

The Louisiana Sabine River Authority will consider approving a contract to sell water from Toledo Bend Reservoir to Texas for up to 99 years into the future on Munda on Thursday, January 12th.

Lake Area industries are among those opposed to the contract. Spokesman Larry DeRoussel explains the industries rely on freshwater from the Sabine Diversion Canal to operate the plants--and they fear the contract could jeopardize that supply. "As we understand the contract we're very concerned about it because it has the potential to have a very negative impact on the operation of the plants in Southwest Louisiana."

Before the Sabine Diversion Canal the industries drew water from the Chicot Aquifer, a huge water bearing sand underground.  Going back to that would put more demand on the Chicot which is the sole source of drinking water for our area.

We will cover that meeting which gets underway at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Cypress Bend Conference Center near Many.
