18-wheeler driver ticketed after train collision

Train collides with 18 wheeler near DeRidder

An 18-wheeler driver was issued a citation after colliding with a train on U.S. Highway 190 about 2 miles west of DeRidder Tuesday morning. The road was closed over eight hours.

Authorities said 61-year-old Hurchel Britton was traveling east on U.S. 190 and approached a railroad crossing with active warning light. Britton reduced his speed but did not observe a northbound train approaching the railroad at low speed. Britton drove across the track and was struck by the caboose of the train, causing the caboose to derail.

"It appears that the signals at the train crossing were active, (and the) truck driver did not see the train. The train was backing down the track," Louisiana State Police Sgt. James Anderson said.

No injuries were reported.

A Houston based crew cleared the wreck, which included a  derailed caboose shoved off the tracks. It happened just before 4:30 a.m. at Schutz Road near US 190 near the Boise plant.
