Suspect's mom "key" to arrest

The following is a press release from the Lafayette Police Department:

On January 9, 2012, at approximately 1:30 am, Lafayette Police responded to an armed robbery that occurred at 624 E. Kaliste Saloom Road.  The clerk advised officers that the suspect entered the convenience store, picked up a beverage from the cooler and approached the counter.

The suspect then produced a handgun and demanded the money from the register.  The suspect fled the area on foot with the cash, a beverage and a pack of cigarettes.  The clerk was not injured during the robbery.

A short time later, Lafayette Police were notified by a Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Deputy of a suspicious person on a parking lot at an area hotel near the convenience store.  The suspect was sitting next to his vehicle waiting on his mother, due to the fact he had locked his keys inside of his vehicle.

The suspect was positively identified from video as committing the armed robbery. The gun, the money, the cigarettes and the beverage were all recovered. Police arrested Nathan Sonnier (28) of Maurice, Louisiana and booked him into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for Armed Robbery.
