Vinton changes its demolition law

Vinton, LA (AP) - Town officials hope a newly revised demolition ordinance will streamline the process of ridding Vinton of blight.

The amendments, adopted by the Vinton Council in December, provide that demolition costs can be billed through property taxes rather than by liens. It also changes the way owners are notified.

The ordinance hadn't been updated in nearly half a century, according to Cade Cole, an attorney for the town.

The law came under fire recently after a property whose owners live in Merryville was brought before the council. That led to questions about how properties are identified for demolition and how owners are notified.

The revisions allow notices to be mailed. Under the old ordinance, demolition notices had to be hand-delivered.
