Sulphur upbeat about prospects for 2012

The opening of the West Calcasieu Business Center was a highlight of 2011 for Sulphur, leaving officials optimistic about what's ahead in 2012 for the city's economy.

Sulphur ended the 2010-11 fiscal year with a $750,000 deficit, although Mayor Chris Duncan said the latest numbers reflect an improvement of $175,000 in sales tax collections from the previous year.

Duncan said there are more big-ticket items and appliances being purchased. He theorized some of that was being bought to replace those purchased after Hurricane Rita struck in 2005.
