Other uses for your Christmas tree after Christmas

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The sign now reads Fireworks USA on Nelson Road in Lake Charles. It once read selling Christmas Trees. The Fireworks USA display is selling trees until the day after Christmas.

Just one day before Christmas and sales of Christmas Trees have been surprisingly steady this week. Fireworks manager, Kimberly Leleux says, "Since Tuesday night we've sold 40 trees, believe it or not. I think people are coming in from out of town visiting their elderly parents. Or maybe someone who isn't able to get their own tree.  And in some cases, people bought trees too early and now their live tree needs to be replaced."

But what do you do with your old tree besides taking them to the curb and throwing them out?

Stine's Lumber Assistant Manager Travis Hoffpauir says, "Last year, Stine's Lumber company brought their excess trees to a recycling location where they were turned into part erosion control".

Other ideas besides erosion control, preserving beaches and creating backyard habitats for birds and insects.

Trees will be available for purchase from 9am-12midnight until December 26th.

We'll update you if there is a recycling plan in our area.
