Fat Tuesday festivities announced

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau held its annual Mardi Gras press conference Tuesday to announce the 2012 Mardi Gras events for the lake area.

"Gumbo Gator" danced his way into the celebration as did the reigning Mardi Gras queens. Everyone in attendance also got their first glimpse of the 2012 Mardi Gras poster.

Crowd pleasing events like "the zone," the area designated alcohol and tobacco free, will return, but Kaylen Fletcher said this year's festivities are going to be bigger and better.

"What's really great is we have over 60 krewes now, as opposed as to what we used to have at 50," said Fletcher. "So we just keep growing each and every year. Something new that we're just really going to be promoting and doing this year is the Iowa Chicken Run. It's actually been going on for 33 years but we're actually getting the word out there more now and so there's so many different things not only in Lake Charles but that Southwest Louisiana has to offer."

The Mardi Gras festivities kick-off January 6th with Twelfth Night.
