First Annual Toy Drive in Allen Parish

What started out as a way to make criminals pay is now "paying off" for needy children right before Christmas.

The Allen Parish D.A.'s Office paired up with the fire departments in the area to hand out toys in the parish for their first annual toy drive.

The donations came in at first as part of a community service program for qualifying convicted criminals.

But after word of the special program got out, even more donations started rolling in from local businesses and individuals.

Santa rode along with District Attorney Todd Nesom and the firefighters to deliver toys, and said Rudolph was at the local dentist with a tooth ache from too many sweets.

Nesom said the look on some of the children's faces made the program much sweeter.

The convoy hit the lower parts of the parish today and will hit the northern part tomorrow.

They gave out gifts to over 70 kids this year, and they hope to expand the project next year.
