Pelican Refining fined $12 million

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A refining company that admitted breaking pollution laws at its Lake Charles facility has been ordered to pay $12 million in fines.

Houston-based Pelican Refining was convicted in Federal Court of violating the Clean Air Act and obstruction of justice in a case that centers on a 2007 chemical release in Lake Charles.

Federal prosecutors say the $12 million will be used to fund environmental projects in Louisiana.
