Aids/HIV growing health problem in 5 parishes

Southwest Louisiana observed World Aids Day.  Southwest Louisiana Aids Council's (SLAC) Candice Pauley says Southwest Louisiana needs to take HIV/AIDS more seriously because of the numbers coming through SLAC.

Pauley is a case manager for SLAC. She says, "We have close to 500 clients. In the last year we see six new clients a month".

According to the CDC, on April 24, 1980, the first person was diagnosed with HIV here in this country. In 2011, someone is diagnosed with HIV or AIDS every nine and a half minutes. In District 5, as of June 30, 2011, there were 982 AIDS cases.

SLAC is located at 1715 Common St. in Lake Charles.
