LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A Lake Charles dog can dive to the bottom of his owner's six-foot deep pool to retrieve a toy.
The 10-year-old chocolate Labroador retriever named Rusty was adopted by local irefighter Brent Manuel. The pooch was underweight, had heart worms and needed a loving home.
"I brought him to the vet and he was, like, 58 pounds," Manuel said. "And, sure enough, he had heartworms."
Manuel said Rusty made it through treatment for the heartworms and is now healthy.
Rusty stays active by running around the backyard, going duck hunting with Manuel and swimming. However, his hidden knack for diving came as a surprise.
"That was something that I didn't expect because that's just something you can't train a dog to do, to go all the way under to the bottom," Manuel said.
Rusty sits by his owner's side and waits for the command to dive in the water to retrieve the orange dummy at the bottom of the pool.
"When you see it for the first time, it's amazing," Manuel said. "It's like, 'How did he do that?'"
