Man charged with simple burglary of a religious building

The following is a Press Release from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office:

On October 7, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an alarm call at a church on Franklin Street in Lake Charles.  When deputies arrived they discovered approximately $1,000 in cash collected by the church to use to feed families during the holiday season, was stolen.

After further investigation a warrant was issued for Melvin Simien, III, 29, of Lake Charles, in connection with the burglary and theft of the church.

On November 22, Simien was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with simple burglary of a religious building; theft between $500--$1,000; and simple criminal damage to property.

Judge Michael Canaday set his bond at $90,000.
