CPSO cracking down on lewd behavior in park bathrooms

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is continuing its crackdown on lewd behavior in or  near Civic Center restrooms.

The sting operation that began a month ago has resulted in 11 arrests on obscenity-related charges. One suspect, a registered sex offender, is facing 40 counts of sexual battery and five counts of indecent behavior with juveniles, officials say.

"We're going to continue this operation until we get rid of it and it is no longer a problem" at these locations, said Tony Mancuso, Calcasieu's sheriff.

The department's seven undercover detectives pose as park patrons or as people looking to participate in lewd acts. They frequent parking lots or restrooms.

A sheriff's department sting in 2007 at Tuten Park on Nelson Road  led to 17 arrests for alleged lewd behavior in the restrooms. Following the sting, the park was shut down.

"We're not going to close our park and we're not going to stop letting our kids go to these parks, Mancuso added. "We're going to stop these activities from happening in our parks."
