Eagle Expo, Oak Park Middle School learns science

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Oak Park Middle School on Oak Park Boulevard in Lake Charles, Louisiana exposed their students to the world of science at Eagle Expo. The Eagle Expo was the brainchild of Mack Dellafosse and Roman Thompson.  Both teamed up to sponsor the student led science expo.

Students led experiments from the six areas of science including life science, earth science, and physical science. The focus was to have the 8th graders have a hands-on experience with science in a non-competitive atmosphere.

Dellafosse says he believes, "that the declining number of African American and Hispanic students pursuing science based careers can be reversed if schools make a valiant effort to introduce underrepresented student populations to the practical nature of science and its everyday presence."

He hopes students will think of themselves as being the next George Washington Carver, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mae C. Jemison (Astronaut), or Patricia Bath (Inventor, Laserphaco Probe for the treatment of cataracts).

Mack Dellafosse is a School Board Member for District 7 in Calcasieu Parish. He and his wife travel around the Parish trying to deliver the good news about science and math to students.
