Veterans Day ceremonies around Lake Charles

As Americans officially observe Veterans Day, locally KPLC reporter Victoria Waterman visited the Avenue of Flags on Broad Street in Lake Charles and toured the USS Orleck.

Avenue of Flags are a display of flags that once adorned caskets of a fallen veteran. There are currently 804 flags flown at Avenue of flags. Some flags display different numbers of stars depending on the era in which they served.

Avenue of flags will continue to be flown until 4pm November 11, 2011.

On board the USS Orleck, veterans came out to see a ship that served during war time. Commissioned Sept. 15, 1945, the USS Orleck saw limited action during WWII as well as Korean War and Vietnam War.

Tours on board the Orleck are from 10am-2:30pm each day. And laser tag each Friday and Saturday evening.

At the Mayfield Taylor McClain American Legion Post #551, there was an AARP defensive driving course given to veterans. After veterans passed the test, they received 25% off of their car insurance.
